NEA Planning Part 1 - Audience profile
My Audience:
One way my research findings have helped me to construct my music video is because it has helped me look into depth of a variety of audience expectations for music videos. For example, the research is representative of 40 people and it shows that mostly women took the survey of a 16-24 demographic. Furthermore, 90% who took survey were White or Caucasian whilst the other 10% represented a different ethnic minority group. Therefore, it can found that the survey may have some bias.
My 'three-minute music video for a protest song' is based around the 'Black Lives Matter' Movement. It consists of a civil rights group who came about in response to extreme police brutality which culminated in the shooting of three African-American men in 2013.
Organisers say the movement's mission is to "eradicate white supremacy and build local power to intervene in violence inflicted on Black communities". The group become more active in the year of 2020 after the shooting of George Floyd by a metropolis police officer. Therefore I wanted to create a music video which showcased the struggle black people still face in a postmodern society. Therefore it was important that I asked

The group become more active in the year of 2020 after the shooting of George Floyd by a metropolis police officer. Therefore I wanted to create a music video which showcased the struggle black people still face in a postmodern society. Therefore it was important that I asked
"Do you support the Black Lives Matter Movement? If so how?"
Out of 38 responses as 2 were skipped, 26 said yes whilst the other 12 said no suggesting that a little under a third does not support the group. Therefore, it is important that My brief of the Music Video and website educates audiences whilst equally remaining entertaining to bring this figure down. One way I will display the message of the BLM movement is through the hybrid genre of a narrative and performative video, showcasing the story of a young black male in modern society and the often struggles and set backs he faces due to his race. It is also important that the website has links for audiences to sign petitions, educate themselves and help raise awareness on the issue.
Lastly, when asked to pick two "techniques in a music video you find the most important" The artist and sound quality were favoured the most with 20 votes for the artist and 15 for the sound quality. This suggests that my song choice should reflect what is liked by most people to target a wide range of audiences. Therefore my choice of using "Where Is The Love?" by the Black Eyed Peas reflects not only the subject matter that is being represented in the music video but also the most favoured 'pop' genre choice of a population. The close link to the Black Lives Matter movement and the lyrics of the song were also found important in the survey as 24 people voted that it had a high influence of how a song could be perceived.
Conclusion:
Overall, the research helped me into understanding what type of audience my brief will be exhibited to. Therefore, my intended target audience will be to a socially concious 16-24 demographic who are mostly white and uneducated on the 'Black Lives Matter Movement'. It will further be linked to a middle/lower-class audience and I will also use a popular pop genre song associated with the age group to help target this type of audience.
